CNC Plastic Machining: Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about our custom CNC plastic machining services? We've compiled answers to some of the most common inquiries we receive from our engineering and procurement partners. If you don't find your answer here, please don't hesitate to contact our expert team.
01 What are your typical machining tolerances for plastic parts?
For most plastic materials, we can consistently achieve standard machining tolerances of ±0.005 inches (±0.127mm). For many high-performance and stable plastics like PEEK and G-10, we can often achieve even tighter tolerances down to ±0.001 inches (±0.025mm) or better, depending on the part geometry and material properties. Please specify your critical tolerances on your engineering drawing, and we will review them for manufacturability.
02 What file formats do you accept for a quote?
We can work with a wide variety of 2D and 3D CAD files. For the fastest and most accurate quote, we prefer 3D solid models in STEP (.stp, .step) or IGS (.igs, .iges) format. We also accept SolidWorks (.sldprt), Parasolid (.x_t), and AutoCAD (.dwg, .dxf) files. For reference, you can also include 2D drawings in PDF format with material specifications and tolerance callouts.
03 How do you handle difficult-to-machine or abrasive plastics like FR-4 and glass-filled Nylon?
This is our expertise. We utilize specialized tooling, such as diamond-coated or solid carbide end mills, which are designed to handle the abrasive nature of glass and carbon-filled composites without rapid wear. Furthermore, we employ optimized cutting strategies and robust dust extraction systems to prevent delamination, ensure a high-quality surface finish, and maintain a clean-room work environment when needed.
04 Do you have a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?
We pride ourselves on being a flexible partner for businesses of all sizes. For our CNC machining services, our MOQ is typically just one piece (MOQ=1). We are happy to support everything from single rapid prototypes to low-to-medium volume production runs. Contact us to discuss the most cost-effective solution for your required quantity.
05 What is a DFM review and is it included?
DFM, or Design for Manufacturability, is a critical engineering review of your part design. Yes, a complimentary DFM analysis is included with every quote request. Our engineers will analyze your design to identify any features that could be difficult or costly to machine. We may provide suggestions to improve your part's strength, reduce machining time, and lower overall cost, all before production begins.
06 What are your typical lead times for custom CNC machined parts?
Lead times can vary depending on part complexity, material availability, and current production capacity. However, for standard prototypes, we typically aim for a lead time of [e.g., 5-10] business days after design approval. For production runs, we will provide a detailed and reliable timeline with your formal quotation. If you have an urgent requirement, please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate an expedited schedule.
